TALLAGHT ROOF FEASIBILTY. . . Introduction |
The site for this project consisted of a terrace of houses situated in the wind swept suburbs of Dublin's poorly planned western fringes. We were approached by the residents who were unhappy with the performance of the existing flat roofs and wished to add another floor of sleeping accommodation to the 2 storey houses. The terrace of houses is part of a larger development which was built in the 1960s and comprised of uniform modernist-style dwellings with a regular rhythm of volumes and window openings. Over time the uniformity of the facades was eroded as generous steel window sections were replaced with smaller plastic alternatives and the clean white aesthetic of the original design was swapped for a smorgasbord of pebble dash, crazy-paving, timber cladding and imitiation brick, to name but a few of the preferred facade treatments. Our proposal was to address not only the requirement for additional space at roof level but also the lack of order which existed in the relatively small terrace. |
